The Crashlanding
Developing Alien Forms
With this project, I wanted to play with the idea of creating two products in a close relationship. Each one carrying their own distinct personalities, but similar enough to be friends.
This subtle narrative then guided different design decisions along the way.

Inspiration

The Process
I created a set of rules for the design beforehand to see what resulting forms would come from it. The intention was to create a series of objects that looked different, but shared things in common.
Cup Development

Iterations on form, especially with the cup, revolved around the idea of these nurples “mutating” and growing into different shapes.

Tray Development
The saucer functions as a home, as vehicle, and as a storage for the passengers most priced possessions.
Final Result

Prototype Models

The saucer was CNC'ed out of solid wood, while the first cup was powder printed.
The Gallery

The first handful of cups were found scattered around the Pasadena area in California.
Some carried unique characteristics, reacting strangely to direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations.

The Second Crashlanding
Cutler Bay, Florida
The second major crash landing occurred near Miami, in a boggy mangrove forest. This time however, the vessel took a different, more bowl-like form. The artifact was documented to produce a low humming frequency when approached.
